Admissions Advice

Nursery

Your child’s name can be registered for nursery from their second birthday. Please come to the school office to pick up a Nursery Preference Form. This form registers your wish for your child to attend our nursery after he or she reaches the age of 3 (The majority of our intake is in September, with a very small number of children joining in January).

Please complete the form and bring it back to the school as soon as you can, together with the following items:

  • Proof of address
  • Your child’s birth certificate.

Letters to explain the way in which we introduce your child into nursery are sent out in April. As part of the introductory process, there will be visits into the Nursery for the new children during the summer term. At the beginning of September, home visits are undertaken by nursery staff. These visits typically last about 45 minutes and provide an opportunity to meet parents and carers on an individual basis and to assist in building up relationships with children when they are at ease in their home environment.

Reception

In the autumn term, parents and carers of nursery age children will receive a Preference Pack. The Preference Form is to be completed by parents and carers to indicate which school they wish their children to attend the following September. The form has to be returned to the local authority during the autumn term, by the date specified on the form.

Please make sure that you return the form before the closing date. If your form is late, it may reduce your chance of getting a place at the school, even if your child is in the nursery class of the school.

The local authority will send out a letter in the spring term to inform parents which school their child has been offered a place at.

During the summer term, Barnes Infant School holds an introductory meeting for parents and carers. There are also opportunities for children during the summer term, before starting in September.

Transition to Junior School

Preference Packs are given out to parents and carers of our Year Two children in the autumn term to register their preferred choice of junior school.

Please note that it is essential to complete and return these forms by the date specified in the pack. Progression from Barnes Infant School to Barnes Junior School is not automatic, as they are classed as separate schools.

We work closely with the staff of Barnes Junior School to ensure that the children’s transition to the Junior School is a smooth and enjoyable one. Children in Year Two will visit the Junior School and meet the Staff. Junior School staff also visit the Infant School and work alongside Year 2 children to build up relationships.

Vacancies

Vacancies in year groups do arise from time to time during the school year, for example, if a child’s family moves to a different area.

Please do not hesitate to contact the school office at any time during the year if you wish to enquire about present vacancies.

If you are a parent or carer of a young child and are considering which Nursery/School to send your child to, please contact us if you would like to look around our Foundation Stage provision.
